What’s new

The Page Sorter allows you to navigate the pages of your .notebook files. SMART Notebook software 10.8 enhances the Page Sorter’s appearance and usability:

You can organize pages into groups. Previously, the first page of each group was numbered 1. Now, pages are numbered sequentially across a .notebook file.

In Full Screen view, SMART Notebook software expands the page to fill the screen by hiding the other user interface elements. If gray bars appear on the sides of the page in Full Screen view, you can change the zoom level to the page’s width to hide them by selecting More Options > Page Width.

The SMART Exchange website includes thousands of lesson plans, question sets and other content that you can download and then open in SMART Notebook software. You can click the new SMART Exchange button to browse and download content from the online community. In addition, you can contribute your own content to the online community through the new File >Share on SMART Exchange option.

If your .notebook files contain large pictures (pictures over 1 MB in file size), your files could open and run slowly in SMART Notebook software. You can now reduce the pictures’ file size without noticeably reducing their quality. As a result, your .notebook files’ overall file sizes will be smaller and the files will open and run more quickly in SMART Notebook software.

SMART Notebook software 10.7 introduced multitouch gesture support for SMART Board 800 series interactive whiteboards. SMART Notebook software 10.8 includes several enhancements to multitouch gesture support, including the following:

• Using multitouch gestures with SMART Notebook Math Tools objects

• Rotating an object around its corners in addition to around its centers (see Rotating objects)

• Resizing an object on its corners or side in addition to on its center (see Resizing objects)

• Displaying a message when you’re zooming in or out using multitouch gestures (see Zooming in and out)

• Displaying a message when you’re navigating pages using multitouch gestures (see Displaying pages)

You can clear digital ink objects from a page while retaining all other objects using the new Edit > Clear Ink from Page option. This option is useful when you’re presenting a .notebook file to a class and then want to reset it to its original state to present to a later class.

SMART Notebook Document Writer is a printer driver that enables you to import content from other programs into .notebook files. When you import content into SMART Notebook software 10.8 using SMART Notebook Document Writer, a dialog box appears, giving you the option to import the content as pictures or as editable objects.

SMART Notebook software 10.8 introduces a new SMART Document Camera window. The window includes new features. In addition, you can now open the window by pressing the Capture button on your SMART Document Camera.

If you have a SMART Document Camera 330 and a mixed reality cube, you can insert 3D models in your .notebook files and manipulate them with the cube.

The newest version of SPU enables you to update and activate SMART software as well as view product keys. Your system administrator can install SPU in Full mode or Dashboard mode. In Full mode, you can view currently installed versions and product keys, and download and install updates as documented in this section. In Dashboard mode, you can only view currently installed versions and product keys.

The SMART Language Setup utility has a new, easier-to-use interface. In addition, you can now set the languages for spell checking as well as the layout for SMART Keyboard in the utility.

SMART Notebook software 10.8 adopts the new SMART Help format, first introduced in SMART Sync 2010 software. This format includes improved search and support for favorites. It works identically across all operating systems and browsers. In addition, a version of the Help is available that you can view on your smart phone or other mobile device (see Home).
