Typing Text with the SMART Keyboard

You can use the SMART Keyboard to type into the current program.

You can also write in the SMART Keyboard's Write view and then convert your writing into typed text.

NOTE: The SMART Keyboard is available in several views, including Classic, Number Pad and Simple. When you start the SMART Keyboard, it appears in the most recently used view. You can change the view at any time.

To type text directly into a program

  1. Place the cursor where you want to enter text in the program.

  2. If you haven't already done so, start the SMART Keyboard.

  3. If the SMART Keyboard includes a text editing area, press KeyboardCloseTextEditingArea.png to close it.

  4. Press the keys on the SMART Keyboard.

To type text in the SMART Keyboard and then insert it into a program

  1. Place the cursor where you want to enter text in the active program or dialogue box.

  2. If you haven't already done so, start the SMART Keyboard.

  3. If the SMART Keyboard doesn't include a text editing area, press KeyboardOpenTextEditingArea.png to display it.

  4. Press the keys on the SMART Keyboard.

The typed text appears in the text editing area.

  1. You can edit text in the text editing area:

  1. Once you have typed the string of characters, press Send.

To write text in digital ink and then convert it to typed text in the program

  1. Place the cursor where you want to enter text in the active program or dialogue box.

  2. If you haven't already done so, start the SMART Keyboard.

  1. If the SMART Keyboard doesn't include a text editing area, press KeyboardOpenTextEditingArea.png to display it.

  2. Select Write in the list of views.

  3. If you will be writing capital letters or numbers, select Capitals or Numbers to improve the accuracy of the text recognition.

  4. Write in the lower half of the SMART Keyboard.

The SMART Keyboard converts your writing and displays it in the text editing area.

  1. You can edit text in the text editing area:

  2. To replace a character in the text editing area, select it, and then press a SMART Keyboard key.

  3. To insert an additional character in the text editing area, press the space between two characters so that a black triangle moves to indicate a new insertion point and then press a SMART Keyboard key.

  4. To remove a character, select it and then press the backspace key KeyboardBackspaceKey.png.

  1. Press Send.
